Lewis & Clark HS
Hall of Fame Class of 1995
Art Frey coached the Lewis and Clark High School track and field team from 1943 to 1968. During his time as the head coach, the Lewis and Clark teams won seventy-five percent of their dual meets. Under his leadership, Lewis and Clark won twelve Spokane City League championships, at one point winning three in a row. His 1962 track and field team won the state championship. On that state championship team alone were five individual state champions that Coach Frey helped develop. The fabulous five from the 1962 team were joined by seven other individual state champions, thus giving Lewis and Clark a total of twelve during Coach Frey’s time as head coach. Coach Frey was known for developing great mile relay teams and he put together a string of five straight state championship mile relay teams, each group breaking the record each year. Coach Frey retired to Lacey where he passed away in 1980.
