Bob Dorr graduated from the University of Washington in 1940 where he played three years of varsity basketball. He then served in World War II before returning to the University of Washington to finish his teaching certificate in 1946. In 1947, he began his teaching and coaching career at Bellingham High School. He spent his entire thirty-one year career at Bellingham serving as the head track and field coach. During his career, Coach Dorr’s teams won five league championships, five district titles and won the state championship in 1949, 1951 and 1958. Coach Dorr won eighty percent of the dual meets his Bellingham teams competed in and he was instrumental in developing nine individual state champions. Coach Dorr’s athletes went on to compete on the NCAA level and in the Olympic Games. He retired in 1978 but continued to preside over the Dorr Invitational Track and Field Meet, named after him in his honor, after his retirement.
