Gordon Robertson has been influencing kid’s lives in a positive way for over forty years. He began his coaching career in 1963 at Pe Ell High School. In 1964, Gordon became the head coach at Sultan High School for two years before settling at Tenino High School. From 1969 until 1999, Gordon held the head coaching position in track and field and cross country.
Over his long and distinguished career, Gordon mentored and guided numerous teams to league and district titles. His girls teams had great success on the state level placing 4th in 1984 and 1988. There was a 2nd place finish in 1985 and a State A Championship in 1986. His 1985 girls 4 x 100m Relay set a long standing State A meet record in 1985 and his guidance was evident with Jessica Brathovd when she set a long standing State A meet record in1989 in the 800m. Over his time as head coach, 16 Tenino athletes stood atop the awards stand as individual state event champions. There were also numerous individual state placers.
Coach Robertson’s love for the sport continues today. He has enjoyed watching his son Ryan move into the ranks of the coaching profession as a head basketball coach and assistant track coach. Gordon is a true example of what is good and right with the coaching profession. He continues to have a presence at the high school he dedicated his professional life to and is an inspiration to coaches in the sport today.
