Columbia River High School, Snohomish High School, Eastern Washington University
Hall of Fame Class of 2018
Of all the qualities that best exemplify Mike Mikos, it is the genuine nature of his humility that stands strongest. Mike has incorporated coaching into his journey in life and has left a lasting legacy on so many people that it would take volumes to publish the letters of support for his induction into the Hall of Fame. One of the most amazing measurements of this great coach is the fact that for 25 of the 30 plus years he has coached, Mike volunteered in his position, refusing to accept any financial payment or salary. He dedicated his life to the service of working with young athletes. He not only taught them how to pole vault, he mentored them and helped them learn how to mature into responsible young adults. As his former athletes would attest, he ended up teaching all his athletes as much about life as he did about the pole vault.
Mike began his career as a pole vault coach in 1982 at Columbia River High School. Over the course of his career, he has guided and mentored five state champions, five 2nd place state medalists, four third place state medalists, and numerous other state qualifiers. He has coached and developed multiple 15 foot and 16 foot pole vaulters, many who were at the time or are still today ranked in the top ten all time. Since 2005, Mike has been an assistant pole vault coach at Eastern Washington University. During his tenure, he has helped coach athletes to Big Sky All-Conference team honors every year. He has coached five Big Sky Champions and 24 All-Conference performers. He has assisted in coaching all the EWU school record holders as well as several vaulters on Eastern’s top ten all-time list for indoor and outdoor seasons. During his time at Eastern, he has helped Eastern produce a Regional or NCAA First Round qualifier in eleven out of twelve years.
It is with the greatest honor that the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association recognize Mike Mikos for induction into the Hall of Fame. There isn’t a finer representative of the pole vault anywhere. More importantly, Mike is a transformational coach who connects with his athletes. He has enjoyed great success as a coach but he has made an even bigger impression in the lives of the athletes he has coached that will last for lifetimes! It is with great honor that we recognize a great coach for his achievements and his contribution to the sport while acknowledging him as an important influence in the lives of all the young athletes he served as a coach. We welcome Mike Mikos into the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame.
