Roger Hansen graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1965, where he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He went on to Seattle Pacific, where he was a 4-year letterman in track for Ken Foreman and earned a teaching degree in English/P.E in 1969. After a year teaching at Lake Washington High School, he served two years in the army. After his service in the army ended, he spent the next three years teaching and coaching at Juanita High School. In 1976, he began teaching and coaching at Lake Sammamish. Roger coached the girls track and field team at Lake Sammamish for 13 years. His teams won 8 KingCo titles and three state titles. In 1989 he returned to Lake Washington High School. Over a fourteen year span, his girls track and field teams at Lake Washington won 6 KingCo titles and one state title and his girls basketball teams were perennial league and state powers.
Roger volunteered his time by serving as president of the Washington State Track and Field Coaches Association in 1981-82. He has twice been named the state Track Coach of the Year. He originated and directed the Sammamish/Lake Washington Girls’ Invitational from 1977 until his retirement last year. He took over the state Heptathlon – Decathlon competition in 1994 and helped direct that until his retirement.
Roger has contributed so much to the sport of track and field in the state of Washington. He continues to work for our sport today by teaching and coaching girls’ track and field at Valley High School in Las Vegas, Nevada after retiring from Washington State. Roger has been married to his wife, Diane, for 34 years, and he attributes her love, patience, and support for helping him during his incredible coaching career, which is recognized now, with induction into the Hall of Fame.
